Students Learn About Making Healthy Decisions Behind the Wheel

Eleventh and Twelfth graders were given a presentation on healthy decisions around driving.  Greg Torell spoke on his experiences of being hit by a drunk driver and how it has affected his life in addition to losing an arm, a leg and his sight.  State Trooper, Eric Miakkula was the first to respond to the scene of Greg’s crash.  He also discussed the importance of making healthy choices and not driving under the influence or texting and driving.  Lastly, Charity Allen, Braham School’s Chemical Health Specialist shared her personal story of her mother whom was killed by a drugged driver.  She also discussed statistics around driving under the influence.  



Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) spread the word by wearing posters that represented statistics on driving under the influence.  

-Every 90 seconds someone is injured by a drunk driver
-On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 52 minutes
-10,076 people were killed in 2013 by drunk drivers
-On average a drunk driver has driven 80 times before their first arrest
-Every day in America 28 people die as a result of drunk driving
-Each day 300,000 people drive drunk and only 4,000 are arrested
-Death’s and injuries associated to drunk driving is 100% preventable
